Gili Trawangan Biorock Project

The Gili Trawangan Biorock Project is one of our most successful coral reef restoration efforts, demonstrating the transformative power of Biorock technology in rebuilding vibrant marine ecosystems. Situated around Gili Trawangan, the largest of the three Gili Islands in Indonesia, this project was initiated to address extensive damage to local reefs caused by destructive fishing practices, coral bleaching, and the pressures of mass tourism.

Restoring Coral Reefs in Gili Trawangan

Since the early 2000s, our team has been working closely with local communities to install Biorock structures along Gili Trawangan's coastline. These structures, powered by low-voltage electrical currents, have rapidly accelerated coral growth, allowing damaged reefs to regenerate at an impressive rate. The results speak for themselves: corals on Biorock structures grow up to three to five times faster and are significantly more resilient to environmental stressors compared to natural growth.

Positive Impact on Marine Biodiversity

The restored reefs have become a thriving sanctuary for marine life. A diverse range of species, including vibrant reef fish, sea turtles, and other marine organisms, now call these regenerated habitats home. The success of this project not only enhances local biodiversity but also strengthens natural coastal defenses, protecting the island's shores from erosion and storm surges.

Empowering the Local Community

Beyond ecological benefits, the Gili Trawangan Biorock Project has brought substantial social and economic advantages to the local community. The flourishing coral gardens have attracted eco-tourists, particularly divers and snorkelers, boosting the island's sustainable tourism sector. This increase in eco-conscious visitors has provided new income opportunities while promoting environmental stewardship among locals. Community members are actively involved in reef monitoring, maintenance, and educational programs, fostering a culture of conservation.

A Beacon of Hope for Coral Restoration

The success of our efforts in Gili Trawangan serves as a model for global coral restoration. As coral reefs face increasing threats from climate change and ocean acidification, the Gili Trawangan Biorock Project exemplifies how innovative solutions can restore and protect these critical ecosystems. We are proud to contribute to the preservation of coral reefs and remain committed to expanding our impact across the world's oceans.

Join us in our mission to save the reefs—because a healthy ocean means a healthy planet.
